Amman Airport Terminal
Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), located 35 km south of Amman, is Jordan’s primary international gateway and a major hub for the region. Named after Queen Alia, the third wife of King Hussein, the airport is a symbol of Jordan’s commitment to hospitality and modernity, welcoming millions of travelers each year.
Historical Background and Origins
QAIA was inaugurated in 1983 to address the increasing air traffic that Amman’s Civil Airport could no longer accommodate. Originally designed for 3.5 million passengers per year, the airport quickly became a vital transit point in the Middle East. In response to continued growth, a new terminal was commissioned and opened in March 2013, doubling the airport’s capacity and introducing a state-of-the-art passenger experience. The project, managed by Airport International Group (AIG), represented a $750 million investment and marked a new era for Jordanian aviation.
Terminal Design and Layout
The terminal’s architecture, designed by Foster + Partners, is inspired by the flowing forms of Bedouin tents, with a tessellated roof canopy of concrete domes. This design not only pays homage to local culture but also allows natural daylight to flood the interior, creating a welcoming and energy-efficient environment. The terminal is glazed on all sides, offering panoramic views of the apron and runways for easy orientation.
The terminal is divided into several key zones:
- Arrivals Hall (lower level): Spacious, open area with high ceilings, baggage claim, customs, and access to ground transportation.
- Departures Hall (upper level): Check-in counters, security screening, passport control, and direct access to departure gates.
- Two main piers: Each with multiple boarding gates, allowing efficient passenger flow and easy navigation.
The terminal’s clear signage and open design make it easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors.
